"a portrait of my child, once a week, every week in 2013."

Stella: On Christmas Eve listing to the children's choir singing the Sound of Music.

Can you believe that we're here now at the final weekend of the year? We've come a long way since the first portrait of the year. I've really enjoyed participating in Jodi's portrait project and marking each week with a photograph of my girl. It's amazing to see incremental changes each week, as Stella goes from chubby faced toddler to long-limbed big girl. Fifty-two short weeks! I can't wait to do it all over again in 2014, and this time with a shiny new camera

Another aspect of this project which I've really enjoyed has been the community mindedness of all the project 52 participants. I've enjoyed playing along with some old blog friends like Liz, Claudia, and Erica as well as discovering some new-to-me blogs like this one, and this one, and this one, which is a constant source of inspiration. Yay, everyone, congratulations on finishing and go team etc.

Stella: Making my heart stop since 2010.

We had about one nice day last week, such is the reality of rainy season. When its nice in the afternoon, you can bet we'll be outdoors. I snapped this little shot on my phone. I didn't even pick up my DSLR once last week. Maybe it's Christmas shenanigan, maybe it's pregnancy, maybe it's a case of holiday homesickness, but I wasn't in the mood.

Still, making photographs of my everyday is so important to me, and I'm pretty sure that my resolutions for 2014 will be photography related. I need to get back into the habit. I'm sort of half-heartedly batting roudn the idea of a daily photo project like the one I completed in 2012, but I'm not sure. That might be too much with a new baby on the horizon. Let's see!!

Linking up, as always, with Jodi.

Oh, and PS, a look back at the year in portraits.

52 | The Ones That Got Away {From Far Away}

I've been enjoying playing along with Jodi and taking weekly portraits of my girl. And what fun to look back on the year that was, admiring the photographs that captured each of our 52 weeks. Of course there were and all the images that didn't make their way into my series, the ones that got away. And following Jodi's suggestion, I've gone back and gathered together a few images that I loved, but never got their moment in the sun.

2013 was certainly a year of travel. So for my collection of The Ones That Got Away, I've chosen images taken on our many (MANY!) little trips.

Admiring strange stone architecture in Cierbon, West Java.

Splashing on a stony beach overlooking Mt. Krakatau, West Java.

Singing on Bunaken, North Sulawesi.

Posing (always the peace sign, always) near Tomahon, North Sulawesi.

Sliding in Singapore.

Sitting next to the canal in Ottawa.

Climbing up the hills in Northern Ontario.

Chilling with Sagey in Toronto.

More splashing in Singapore.

Exploring in Bali.

Stella: trying out the baby's crib.

We put up the crib this weekend with the help of a pint-sized carpenter. I can tell you one thing, I have never seen this girl more excited about anything. Ever. Not chocolate. Not presents. Not even Christmas. Crib day. Knocked her socks right off. Stella is so excited for this baby to get here. She's going to make the best kind of big sister.

Stella: Splashing in the baby pool.

We've made some backtracks in swimming these past few weeks, I think because I pushed a little too hard.

As a teeny tiny little thing, she took her first steps just before one. And then refused to walk again until 15 months.

When will I learn? You can't push this willful and circumspect little person. She does things in her own time. When she's good and ready and sure that she'll be successful.

Aren't these from last week beautiful?

Stella: "Hello Nadam, I check your baby, okay? Is it a baby boy or a baby girl?"

We've been playing a lot of doctor-doctor, which is great for me, because as the patient, I get to lie down. And that, at eight months pregnant, is tops.

Stella is getting more and more excited about Baby Brother. She is volunteering little kisses to my belly, and asks about where his feet are. And at bedtime, she likes to lie down with her hands on my bump. She's going to make a great big sister.

Stella: "Chocolate cake!"

I took this picture just as the kitchen timer rang. It was a lazy Saturday. The kind where, despite the lovely weather, our Saturday activities don't extend much beyond a Peppa Pig marathon. Normally I find these types of days thickly oppressive. But this Saturday, we abandoned screen guilt, played a rowdy game of "push Papi off the bed" and made a chocolate cake. It was perfect.

Stella: Wanted to be pool-side even as dusk fell.

We've been in Bali for the past few days on a little family babymoon. Strangely I have hardly had my camera out, which is a shame, really because the Chef and I had such a fun time with Stella, and I have hardly any images of our first real family vacation.

I'd like to say that the reason for my photographic hiatus has something to do with living in the moment (because isn't that what bloggers are supposed to say?) But actually it had more to do with the fact that it was hot. And we were in the pool basically the entire time. And I was slowing down with this big belly. And as I approach the final stretch of this pregnancy, I feel like I'm turning inward. Maybe all my creativity is going towards creating this little boy? I dunno. Next week I'm vowing to pick up my camera more.

Last week, I stumbled acorss two new blogs that I'm now following as a result of this photo project: one, and two. Isn't it lovely, this little community?

Stella: Asleep. Awake.

She rarely takes afternoon naps these days. But after a weekend full to the brim, she slept. And I lay down too, though I wasn't even tired. Afternoon sleeps with my girl, they are gold dust.

This baby is styled perfectly, wouldn't you say? And this boy is adorable, dressed to the nines!

Stella: She spent almost the entire weekend running off, exploring the "crunchry side" with her friend.

Stella and I are back from a much-needed respite in country where we spent a three-day weekend with some of the very best people in Jakarta. It's amazing what some fresh air and dirty feet can do for the soul. I'm feeling clarity and direction like I haven't in months, and am determined to make regular trips outside of the big city.

Stella: "Mama, I want to watch babies on your 'puter!"

As I grow bigger, I'm thinking about helping Stella to prepare for a monumental shift in our family dynamic. And thus, I'm employing YouTube as an educational tool (bare with me!) I'm showing Stella select newborn videos on YouTube (which is basically her favourite ever ever ever, though she will take a side of airplane videos along with a generous serving of babies), and talking about what babies can and can't do.

Stella's understanding of babies is based mostly on her experience with those more mobile and interactive than the one that will join us in a few months. And so, she expects our baby to come into the world ready to crawl, eat yoghurt, and tolerant of endless and complicated games of baby-baby. I'm hopeful that a few newborn videos can open her mind {just a crack} to the idea that babies are pretty limited in their ability to interact!

Have any of you tips or resources on preparing an older kid for a new baby?

Stella: Feeling proudly independent, and happily swimming on her own.

We're celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving in Jakarta today and I'm busy in the kitchen. So I'll just pop in and highlight this image of sweet Bo who has traveled all the way to from her side of the world, where we are visiting, to celebrate autumn and the harvest festival in my side of the world.

I'd love it if you could send a vote or two my way on this happy, thakful day!

Stella: Afraid to get in the pool, and reluctant to pose for my camera.

Stella and I received one of the most coveted tickets in expatdom this weekend: an invite to a Saturday afternoon barbecue with a house full of great people, a pool full of swimming kids, and lots and lots of grilled food with which to fill our bellies.

A barbecue with some friends is the simplest of pleasures, right? Something that you wouldn't think twice about in Suburban North America. But here, oceans away from the familiar, it's a rare treat, a connection to home and a reminder of community.

We ate, and talked, chased kids, and laughed, until the skies opened up to a topical downpour and we all piled into taxis, and headed home, hearts full.

How 'bout some colourful babies from last week? Strips and sandals in the grass; interplay of contrasting colours and geometric patterns, oh, and sparkles; and a knit baby hat that almost makes me want to feel that autumn chill. And here's a little Fox for good measure because week after week, his mum kills it with her camera.

Stella: Standing in the cassava fields, admiring the view.

We got out of the city today, which is a major accomplishment. Living car-free as we do, it's easy to get stuck in  a routine circuit of shopping malls, hotel brunches and indoor playgrounds. But a little planning, and a little effort pay major dividends in the form of fresh air, vitamin D and lovely vistas. I've got to do this more often!

Stella: She asks me to colour or to paint almost ever day.

So, I'm not artist, but I do appreciate a good colour palette and the absence of scribbles. Which is why I have my own colouring book. And I don't share. This great book was given to me by the sweetest friend who knows me so well she could anticipate my need for selfish colouring. That's love.

Oh, also, could you send a few votes our way? I'd really appreciate it! xo

Lately I haven't really been feeling my camera. Like I have this idea in my mind of what I'd like to achieve when I depress that shutter button, when the images come out looking very, very meh. Instead of dreamy, quiet, tropical, creamy light + faded darks. This lady really inspires me. I've watcher her photography grow by leaps and bounds during the course of our internet friendship.

Part of the problem is I haven't really picked up my camera seriously in while. Also, maybe I need some time to collect inspiration? Maybe get outside more? Check out some new vistas? And maybe a class? Or a book? Or some good jamz in my earbuds? Ideas?

At any rate. I am continually blown away by Lamb Loves Fox. Last week included some photographic mastery AND some real life lolz, which, is the best. Obvs.

Stella: paint on her face and hands, mischief in her eyes. Moments later I caved and let her paint all over my face, too. It was one of those days. What can I say.

I missed last weeks link up due to travel, and while I had every intention of catching up on the 52 project, in a bout of early morning productivity, I promptly inserted my SD card into my CD drive. (Don't ask. It was before six am. That's all I've got.) So last week's images may be lost to the sands of time (or bowels of my computer, as it were.)

Oh, and also: I have news. Of the biggest and best kind.

Stella: Making friends and building a pool at red sands beach. There's hardly a child in this world that this kid wouldn't befriend.

With all the travel we've been doing over the past few weeks, I've neglected my usual Sunday ritual of admiring weekly portriats. I promise I'll be back on my game next week. I'm socping out my favourites from this week as I type!
